Assistant Fleet Bandmaster

Ensign James Caliva, a native of San Antonio, Texas enlisted in the United States Navy as a Navy Musician in 2005. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Thomas Edison State University. 

Following graduation from Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois, Ensign Caliva attended Musician “A” school at the Armed Forces School of Music in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

His first assignment was to U.S. Pacific Fleet Band in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he deployed on the USNS Mercy in support of Pacific Partnership 2008. In 2009, he reported to the U.S. 7th Fleet Band, where he served as unit leader of the popular music group, ‘Orient Express.’ 

In 2013, he reported to Naval School of Music, where he served as a percussion instructor and was selected for commissioning as a Limited Duty Officer Bandmaster. 

On Sept. 1, 2018, he was commissioned as an ensign and is currently assigned as the assistant fleet bandmaster for U.S. Fleet Forces Band in Norfolk, Virginia. 

Ensign Caliva’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (eight awards), Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Navy Good Conduct Medal (four awards). He is qualified Enlisted Surface Warfare and Master Training Specialist.
