CAPT John J. Barnett
Commanding Officer

A native of Clearwater, Florida, CAPT Barnett graduated from the Maine Maritime Academy in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation. He subsequently commissioned in the United States Navy through the Merchant Marine Reserve program. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College.

Barnett served at sea in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. His sea tours include assignments as Communications Officer in USS Thorn (DD 988), Landing Craft Utility (LCU) Detachment Officer-in-Charge at Assault Craft Unit 2, Operations Officer in USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49), Operations and Plans Officer in the staff of Commander, Amphibious Squadron 11, Executive Officer in USS Tortuga (LSD 46) and Commanding Officer of USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Ashland (LSD 48) and USS San Diego (LPD 22).

Ashore, Barnett has served as instructor and curriculum developer at the Surface Warfare Officer’s School in Newport, Rhode Island, completed JPME Phase I and the Naval Operational Planner’s Course at the Naval War College, served as an operational planner in the Plans and Policy Directorate on the staff of Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and served on the staff of the NATO Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger, Norway.

Capt. John Barnett assumed command of USS Green Bay (LPD 20) on March 9, 2020.
