SAN DIEGO (NNS) – Capt. David Oden, commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) announced the names of eight petty officers first class selected for advancement to the rank of chief petty officer during an all hands call, Aug. 7.
Electrician’s Mate 1st Class Hubert Bell, Damage Controlman 1st Class Patrick Butters, Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Royce Carpenter, Personnel Specialist 1st Class Thinh Le, Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Will Mickelsen, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Amber Peck, Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Ernesto Solano and Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 1st Class Sylvester Williams learned they were selected at the all hands call.
“This is definitely a blessing,” said Williams. “I wouldn’t be here without the support of my Sailors.”
The selectees look forward to the training they will receive from the Chiefs’ during the induction process.
“Coming up in the Navy, I knew I wanted to do the 20 years,” said Bell. “I just wanted to be a Chief. I knew that as a fireman. The power of the Chiefs’ Mess, the deckplate leadership; I just wanted to be a part of it. I can’t wait for the training and experience. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Makin Island, homeported in San Diego, is conducting a depot-level maintenance availability.
