|CDR Javier Medina
Commander Medina is a native of Guayanilla, Puerto Rico. He began his career by enlisting in 1988 and serving onboard USS IWO JIMA (LPH 2) and USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65).
In 1994 he was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program and was commissioned an Ensign in 1998 after graduating from Norfolk State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. In 2006 he earned both a Master's degree in Public Administration from Troy State University and a certificate for Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I from the Air Force Command and Staff College. In 2015 he completed JPME Phase II at the Joint Forces Staff College. He also completed certifications in System Engineering, Science and Technology Management, Program Management, and Test & Evaluation from the Defense Acquisition University. In 2019 he completed all coursework towards a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Business Technology with Applied Computer Science.
At sea, Commander Medina served onboard USS CARR (FFG 52) as First Lieutenant, Combat Information Center Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer, USS SAN JACINTO (CG 56) as Main Propulsion Assistant, Auxiliaries Officer, and Assistant Chief Engineer, USS HAWES (FFG 53) as Combat Systems Officer, and USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) as Auxiliaries Officer and Assistant Chief Engineer. He served as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of Beachmaster Unit Two (BMU TWO) from March 2016 through December 2018. His most recent assignment was AMPHIBIOUS SQUADRON FOUR (PHIBRON FOUR) were he served as Chief Staff Officer. His current assignment is as Executive Officer of USS WASP (LHD 1).
Ashore, Commander Medina served at AFLOAT TRAINING GROUP ATLANTIC (ATGL) as team leader and assistant officer in charge in the Ordnance Handling Safety and Assistant Team (OHSAT), RIVERINE GROUP ONE (RIVGRU ONE) as Requirements Officer and Science & Technology Officer, EXPEDITIONARY STRIKE GROUP TWO (ESG TWO) as Assistance Chief of Staff (ACOS) Operations and Deputy ACOS Operations, Surface Warfare Officer School Command (SWOSCOLCOM) as Academic Director for Fleet Training and at Operational Test and Evaluation Force (OPTEVFOR) as Operational Test Director for the Air Missile Defense Radar.
CDR Medina has operational experience in the Adriatic Sea, Alborán Sea, Arabian Sea, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, North & South Atlantic Ocean, North & South Pacific Ocean, Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Sea of Greece.
Personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Silver Star in lieu of a 7th award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Gold Star in lieu of a 2nd award), and various unit and campaign awards.
