|CDR Jose A. Roman
A native of Miami, Florida, Commander Jose A. Roman enlisted in the Navy in 1990 and earned a commission through the Enlisted Commissioning Program.
Roman’s at-sea tours include auxiliaries officer, electrical officer, and first lieutenant aboard USS Elrod (FFG 55), operations officer/navigator aboard USS Tornado (PC 14)/USS Chinook (PC 9), engineering officer on USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), executive officer of MCM Crew Swerve and MCM Crew Conflict and subsequently commanding officer of MCM Crew Conflict. His operational experiences include multiple NATO/U.S. 6th and 5th Fleet deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Active Endeavor and Operation Iraqi Freedom. His experiences also include operations in U.S. 3rd Fleet and with the U.S. Coast Guard conducting inter-service homeland security operations in support of Operation Noble Eagle to include the Gulf of Mexico.
Ashore he served at the Center for Surface Combat Systems as gunnery schools officer; Commander, Naval Surface Forces Pacific as force navigator; the Office of Security Cooperation Iraq at U.S. Central Command as team chief; and at the Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command as a fleet assessor and instructor. While on shore, he earned a master’s degree in education, qualified master training specialist and graduated from the Joint Combined Warfighting School at the Joint Forces Staff College.
His current assignment is commanding officer onboard USS Freedom (LCS 1).
His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (5 awards), and various unit awards.
