Commander Tom M. Sandoval graduated from the University of Texas of San Antonio in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. After attending Officer Candidate School, he received his commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy in January 1996. CDR Sandoval received his MA degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School in December 2002.

In his initial sea tour, CDR Sandoval was assigned to USS COMSTOCK (LSD 45) as Electrical Officer and then Assistant First Lieutenant. While on COMSTOCK, CDR Sandoval deployed to the Western Pacific/Indian Ocean and later participated in CARAT 99. He earned his Engineering Officer of the Watch and Surface Warfare Officer qualifications on this tour.

In December 2000, CDR Sandoval reported to USS STETHEM (DDG 63) as ship’s Navigator. During this tour, he once again deployed to the Western Pacific/Indian Ocean in 2001.

After the completion of Naval Postgraduate School and Department Head School in July 2003, CDR Sandoval reported to USS ROBERT G BRADLEY (FFG 49) as Chief Engineer in August 2003. While on ROBERT G BRADLEY, CDR Sandoval completed a six month SOUTHCOM/Drug Interdiction deployment. Additionally, CDR Sandoval attained full Tactical Action Officer qualification during this tour.

In February 2005, CDR Sandoval reported to USS PELELIU (LHA 5) as First Lieutenant. While on PELELIU, CDR Sandoval completed a highly successful Arabian Gulf/Western Pacific deployment in 2006. After his tour as First Lieutenant, CDR Sandoval fleeted up to be ship’s Navigator in August of 2006. As Navigator, CDR Sandoval was designated as Force Navigator by Commander Destroyer Squadron 31 for PELELIU Pacific Partnership 2007.

CDR Sandoval reported to Commander Pacific Fleet in February 2008 as Assistant Battle Watch for PACFLT. His personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (3 Gold Stars) and the Navy Achievement Medal (2 Gold Stars), in addition to various unit awards and service ribbons.
