PACIFIC OCEAN (September 11, 2010) – Sailors on board the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG 82) gathered Saturday to reflect on the nine year anniversary of the terrorist attacks against the United States.
The ceremony took place on Lassen’s mess decks and included an address from executive officer Cmdr. Scott C. McClelland, recitations from President Bush’s speech after the attacks on September 11, 2001 and President Obama’s Memorial Message in 2009.
“It is important we remember the events of 9/11 and continue to honor those who were lost on that day” commented Gas Turbine Systems Master Chief Petty Officer Phillip M. Morgan after the ceremony. “It motivates us and puts everything back into perspective about why we train and what we are out here for.”
The ceremony culminated with a slide show presentation in remembrance of the victims and heroes of 9/11. After the event, Lassen’s crew continued in their training and underway operations as a participant in exercise Valiant Shield 2010.
