CDR Jonathan L. Schmitz
CDR Jonathan L. Schmitz 
Commanding Officer (December 2012 - May 2014)

Commander Schmitz is originally from Huntsville, Alabama. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.

CDR Schmitz reported to USS CARON (DD 970) in Norfolk, Virginia for his first division officer tour, deploying as part of the JOHN C. STENNIS Strike Group. Following AEGIS Combat Systems training in Dahlgren, Virginia, he reported to USS MOBILE BAY (CG 53), forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan for his second division officer tour, deploying twice, in support of Joint Task Force East Timor and as part of the KITTY HAWK Strike Group.

After his division officer tours, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, earning a Master’s Degree in National Security Affairs. He also completed Phase 1 of his Joint Professional Military Education.

CDR Schmitz reported to USS STETHEM (DDG 63) in San Diego, California for his first department head tour. He served as Operations Officer, completing the successful initial operations capability testing for the Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control System and Tomahawk Block IV missile. Following that tour, he reported to USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for his second department head tour. He served as Operations Officer, completing a deployment and multiple successful operational tests of the AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense System.

Following his department head tours, he reported to the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee, where he served in the Surface Warfare Officer Distribution Division (PERS-41) as a Placement Officer and Assistant Community Manager. Following his tour in Millington, he reported to the Office of the Vice President in Washington, DC where he served as a Military Aide to both Vice President Cheney and Vice President Biden.

CDR Schmitz served as Executive Officer in USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62) from July 2011 to December 2012. He assumed command 17 December 2012.

His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards), along with various service awards and unit citations.
