Hull Technician Fireman Benjamin Chewey was named the Blue Jacket of the Year for Commander, Destroyer Squadron 23 (COMDESRON 23), Nov. 23.
The Blue Jacket of the Year is selected by COMDESRON 23 and goes to the best all-around E-3 or junior Sailor in the Squadron.
“We are proud, but not surprised that Fireman Chewey was selected for this honor,” said Cmdr. Mark W. Lawrence, USS Paul Hamilton’s commanding officer. “He represents the Phantom Warrior ethos and the ideals of all Sailors on board our great warship.”
Fireman Chewey was selected for this honor among hundreds of Sailors from six different ships. Educational achievements, job performance, personal awards, and a myriad of other factors are considered when selecting the Blue Jacket of the Year.
“I am humbled to have been selected,” said Chewey. “It means so much to be recognized for your hard work, and I could not have done it without help from my amazing shipmates on board Paul Hamilton.”
