ARABIAN GULF – Sailors aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale (DDG 106) honored women throughout history with a presentation and cake cutting ceremony, March 30.
The presentation highlighted this year’s Women’s History Month theme, “Visionary Women: Champions of Peace and Nonviolence”. According to the National Women’s History Alliance, the theme honors women who led efforts to end war, violence and injustice through the use of nonviolence.
“Women have always been there,” said Ens. Briana Schmidt, from Boone, North Carolina. “History seldom includes the full picture that embraces the irreplaceable impact of women in the armed forces. By celebrating the powerful women of our history, we complete the story. We give these women the credit they might have never received.”
Stockdale is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of
naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
