|Commander Jermaine "JB" Brooms
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Commander Jermaine B Brooms enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1993. He served
sea tours aboard the USS SURIBACHI (AE 21), plank owner of Mine Countermeasure Rotational Crew
Delta embarking USS SENTRY (MCM 3), USS GUARDIAN (MCM 5) and finally USS WARRIOR (MCM 10).
His shore duty was at AEGIS Training and Readiness Center in Dahlgren, VA until being selected for the
Seaman-to-Admiral Commissioning Program in 1999. He graduated from Old Dominion University with
two Bachelor of Science Degrees in Accounting and Finance earning his commission as an Ensign in July
Upon graduating from Surface Warfare Officer School, he reported to USS GONZALEZ (DDG 66) in
Norfolk, Virginia as the Ordnance Officer and later USS LABOON (DDG 58) as Damage Control Assistant.
While aboard USS GONZALEZ (DDG 66), Commander Brooms deployed in Standing NATO Mediterranean
Group (SNMG) 2003 Surface Operations and earned his Surface Warfare Officer Qualification.
Following sea duty, Commander Brooms served as the Seamanship and Navigation Instructor and the
Class of 2009 Student Advisor at the NROTC Unit, University of Illinois where he also earned a Master of
Science Degree in Accounting with a Specialization in Taxation.
Upon graduating from Department Head (DH) School, he reported to USS STOUT (DDG 55) as the
Weapons Officer and later Combat Systems Officer from May 2010-June 2013. Commander Brooms
deployed with STOUT in support of Exercise Joint Warrior 10-2 and EUCOM Ballistic Missile Defense
Deployment 2010/11 and ultimately participated in Operation Odyssey Dawn.
After DH tours,
CDR Brooms was selected for early command and served as Executive Officer on USS
SENTRY (MCM 3) and USS ARDENT (MCM 12) where he fleeted up as Commanding Officer from
February 2014-November 2016.
Post early command, CDR Brooms served at Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center,
Sea Combat Division as assistant Department Head for N5, Tactics and Doctrine.
CDR Brooms has earned various unit, expeditionary, and campaign awards.
