Executive Officer (September 2015 - May 2016)
Commander Al Villanueva, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, graduated from San Diego State University in 1996, and was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 1998. While on shore duty, he graduated from the University of San Diego in January 2005 with a Master of Science in Global Leadership. From 2011 to 2012, he attended the Naval War College and earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, while also attending the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School (MAWS).
CDR Villanueva’s initial sea tour from 1999 to 2001, was First Division Officer and then Assistant First Lieutenant onboard USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47), where he deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Exercises Iron Magic and Red Reef. During his follow-on sea tour from 2001 to 2003, he was Fire Control Officer onboard USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53), where he again deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operations Southern Watch and Enduring Freedom. For shore duty from 2003 to 2005, he was stationed with Fleet Combat Training Center, Pacific, then with Tactical Training Group, Pacific, where he served as Sea-Launched Attack Missile Exercise (SLAMEX) Officer.
From 2006 to 2007, he served in his first Department Head tour as Chief Engineer onboard USS VANDEGRIFT (FFG 48), forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, and then shifted homeport to San Diego, CA. From 2007 to 2008, he served in his second Department Head tour as Material Officer with Commander, Destroyer Squadron Two One, where he deployed to the Arabian Gulf with USS JOHN C. STENNIS Strike Group in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
From 2008 to 2011, CDR Villanueva served as Flag Aide to VADM McCoy, Commander of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), in Washington, DC. From 2012 to 2014, he served as Lead Planner for all Korean Operational Plans, with Commander, Seventh Fleet (COMSEVENTHFLT), forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, and embarked onboard USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19). He currently serves as Executive Officer onboard USS GRIDLEY (DDG 101).
