Captain Joseph Naman is a native of Maryville, TN. He attended Auburn University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Management and was commissioned in 1989. He also attended National University in San Diego, CA where he earned a Master of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Marketing.

At sea, Captain Naman has commanded Destroyer Squadron 50 in Bahrain and the frigate USS Reuben James (FFG 57) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During his seagoing career, he has made numerous deployments around the world. He has also served as Executive Officer in USS Mobile Bay (CG 53); Combat Systems Officer and Weapons Control Officer in USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62); Commissioning Crew of USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) and a division officer in USS Waddell (DDG 24). He has been fortunate to have been associated with outstanding crews who have earned the Spokane Trophy, ASW Bloodhound Award, and four Battle “E” Awards.

Captain Naman has been assigned to several staff positions ashore. In 1994, he was assigned to Surface Warfare Development Group San Diego Detachment. In 2001, Naman was assigned to Naval Surface Force U.S. Pacific Fleet in the Training & Readiness Department. In 2004, he was assigned to the Chief of Naval Operations Staff in Washington, DC where he worked in the Assessments Directorate (N81). From 2010 until May 2012 he was the Deputy Current Operations Officer (J331) for U.S. Pacific Command. In 2014, he was assigned to the U.S. Naval Forces Europe/U.S. Naval Forces Africa Command as the Deputy Operations & Intelligence Director and Maritime Operations Center Director. From August 2015 to July 2016, he served as a Senior Fellow on the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group. In November 2016, CAPT Naman joined the Chief of Naval Operations Staff once again to serve as the Deputy Director for Surface Warfare Operations, Maintenance, and Modernization (N96G).

Captain Naman's awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal as well as various campaign and unit awards.
