CNIC Visits Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam

PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- The commander of Navy Installations Command toured Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) March 29-30,for the first time since Naval Station Pearl Harbor and Hickam Air Force Base combined to become JBPHH.

Vice Adm. Michael Vitale visited Pacific Fleet and Marine Forces Pacific headquarters, toured historic Ford Island, and visited various facilities at JBPHH.

Vitale also took time to visit the recently opened USS Arizona Memorial Visitor's Center.

"I am very pleased to see the improvements at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum and Visitor Center," said Vitale. "Our partnership with the National Park Service is a strong bond, a firm commitment to honoring the history and heritage of Pearl Harbor and the memory of Dec. 7, 1941."

Vitale took special note of the strides that JBPHH is taking to become a fully operational capable joint base, as well as Commander, Navy Region Hawaii's commitment to fleet and family readiness.

"I know this is a fast-paced visit, and I am able to see only some of the great things happening here," Vitale said. "What's obvious is the sense of teamwork and sacrifice in meeting the demands of family readiness and support to the warfighter."

Capt. Richard Kitchens, commander of JBPHH, said it was a good visit and a great opportunity to show Vitale the ongoing progress.

"Vice Adm. Vitale was impressed with the integration of our base support functions through a truly joint effort of both Navy and Air Force personnel," said Kitchens. "Our teamwork and cooperation was evident, as was the fact we are moving forward toward a successful transition to full operational capability on Oct. 1 and beyond."

While on the Navy side of JBPHH, Vitale took tours aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Port Royal (CG 73) and the attack submarine USS Greenville (SSN 772).

"During this trip, I was able to visit USS Port Royal and USS Greeneville. I think it's important to visit various platforms, to talk to Sailors on the waterfront, and to learn what we need to do to support the warfighter, to support the fleet," said Vitale
