A native of New York, New York, he enlisted in the Navy in 2001 as an Aviation Ordnanceman. His first duty station was Strike Fighter Squadron 136 (VFA-136), stationed out of NAS Oceana Virginia Beach, Virginia. During his tour he deployed onboard USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) and USS George Washington (CVN-73).
Wanting to enhance his career, he decided to cross rate to Information Systems Technician. He went on to complete IT “A” School and was then stationed at NCTAMS PAC, Illinois. After three years of OCONUS duty, he volunteered for an Individual Augmented Assignment to Iraq, where he worked jointly with the Army, Air Force, and Iraqi Army. He returned after his deployment and received orders to NCTS Naples, Italy, and now serves as the Leading Petty Officer onboard USS Cape St George (CG-71).
While on shore duty Hawaii, he qualified as COMSEC Supervisor and Message Center Supervisor. While stationed overseas, he was handpicked as the command EKMS Local Element and later served as Joint Fleet Tactical Operations Center Watch Officer Assistant where he advanced to First Class Petty Officer. His Naval career has taken him around the world.
Petty Officer Baez’s personal decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal (1), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5) as well as the Iraqi Campaign Medal. He received the Joint Service Commendation Medal for conducting quarterly basic computer operation courses for 50 Iraqi soldiers and was the liaison that led to the installation of a cell phone tower that improved the morale of 2,500 Iraqi soldiers who had no way of communicating with base.
