Executive Officer (June 2014 - November 2015)
Lieutenant Commander Mortensen was raised in Murdock, Nebraska, and graduated from Elmwood-Murdock High School in 1996. He attended the United States Naval Academy earning a B.S. degree in Systems Engineering and his commission as an Ensign in May, 2000.
Upon completion of Division Officer Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island, he reported to the USS PATRIOT (MCM 7) in January 2001. During this tour, he served as Communications Officer, Combat Information Center Officer and Operations Officer completing two deployments and numerous international exercises. In June 2002 he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade.
Following his tour onboard USS PATRIOT, LCDR Mortensen attended Nuclear Power School and Nuclear Power Training Unit Balston Spa at S8G Prototype. From October 2003 to January 2006, he served as RP05 Division Officer and Assistant Main Propulsion Assistant onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74). During this tour he completed a deployment to Seventh Fleet and a 12 month Dry-docking Planned Increment Availability at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. In June 2004 he was promoted to Lieutenant.
LCDR Mortensen next served as a student at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California earning a Masters Degree in Systems Engineering and completing Phase I Joint Professional Military Education. Following Naval Postgraduate School, LCDR Mortensen attended AEGIS Weapons System School in Dahlgren, Virginia and Department Head Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island.
After graduating from Department Head Surface Warfare Officers School he served on USS GRIDLEY (DDG 101) from June 2008 to January 2010 as the Operations Officer. During this tour he completed two deployments to Fifth Fleet and was temporarily assigned to Destroyer Squadron Seven to assist in Fifth Fleet exercise planning and operational plan development.
Completing his tour onboard USS GRIDLEY, he was assigned to USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) from January, 2010 until January, 2012 as the Chemical Radiological Assistant. During this tour he completed the endgame of a 27 month Dry-docking Planned Increment Availability at Newport News Shipyard and a Fifth Fleet deployment. In January 2010 he was advanced to Lieutenant Commander
Returning to shore duty LCDR Mortensen took charge as Commander, Naval Air Forces, Pacific detachment Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Officer in Charge, serving as a type commander represent for three aircraft carrier drydock availabilities.
LCDR Mortensen’s personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (3), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2), the Battle E (3) and other various unit and campaign awards.
Lieutenant Commander Mortensen assumed his current duties as Executive Officer, USS BUNKER HILL (CG 52) in June of 2014.
