CDR Michael Merrill
Commanding Officer

Commander Michael Merrill graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in August, 1997. On graduation he was commissioned as an Ensign through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.

After completing Surface Warfare Division Officer School in Newport, RI, CDR Merrill reported onboard USS BUNKER HILL (CG52) as the Main Propulsion Division Officer. There he qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer and received his EOOW certification. In July 2000, he reported onboard the USS ANCHORAGE (LSD 36) as the Assistant First Lieutenant. While deployed to CENTCOM, he participated in Operation Determined Response, providing port security to the USS COLE.

CDR Merrill attended the Surface Warfare Officer Department Head School in 2005 and was assigned his first Department Head Tour as Operations Officer onboard USS JOHN S. MCCAIN (DDG 56). He completed his second Department Head tour as Officer-in-Charge of Maritime Expeditionary Boat Division 55. Deploying to CENTCOM in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, CDR Merrill provided Maritime Infrastructure Protection for Iraq’s two Oil Platforms, ABOT and KAAOT. Following his second Department Head Tour, CDR Merrill reported to Carrier Strike Group SEVEN (CCSG7) as the Training and Readiness Officer in February 2009. While assigned to CCSG7, CDR Merrill deployed to CENTCOM in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. CDR Merrill completed his XO-SM tour as the C5I Officer onboard USS BOXER in 2012 where he again deployed to CENTCOM, participating in National Tasking in the struggle against violent extremism. In 2016-2017 he served as Executive Officer at Beachmaster Unit ONE.

Ashore, CDR Merrill completed a tour at Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Pacific as an Instructor where he earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration at San Diego State University. Additionally, CDR Merrill completed a tour at Commander, U.S. SIXTH FLEET in Naples, Italy as the Deputy Director for Integrated Air and Missile Defense, actively supporting Operations Atlantic Sentry and Sharp Sentry.

CDR Merrill’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), the Army Achievement Medal and various unit and service awards.
