Captain Brendan R. McLane
Chief of Staff (June 2017 - March 2018)

Captain Brendan McLane is a 1990 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Prior to his current position, he was the Director of the U.S. 6th Fleet Maritime Operations Center and Deputy Operations Officer at Naval Forces Europe/Naval Forces Africa.

McLane served aboard USS Lewis B. Puller (FFG 23), USS Vicksburg (CG 69), USS Moosbrugger (DD 980), and USS Simpson (FFG 56). He also served on the staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron 14.

From 2008-2010, he commanded USS Carney (DDG 64). Under his command Carney won the Battle Efficiency (Battle E) award, the Battenberg Cup, and deployed with the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group to U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

McLane returned to 5th Fleet from 2013 to 2015 as the deputy and then commodore of Destroyer Squadron 50 and led Task Force 55 and Coalition Task Force 152.

In 2005-2008, he served on the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV) staff in the operations (N3/N5) department, where he was the lead planner for Global Maritime Partnerships and coordinator of the War Fighter Talks series.

In 2006, he deployed to Iraq with the U.S. Army’s 354th Civil Affairs Brigade as lead operations planner. In 2010-2012, he ran the Israel Desk in the J5-Europe Division of the U.S. European Command.

He graduated with highest distinction from the College of Naval Command and Staff. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history and master’s degrees in national security affairs and public administration. He completed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT’s) Seminar XXI and the Naval Operational Planning Course (now Maritime Advanced Warfighting School).
