Commander Brian K. Hamel
CDR Brian Hamel, a native of Michigan, is a 2000 graduate of Old Dominion University. He enlisted in the Navy in 1993 as a Personnelman and served as a New-Construction Detailer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel (PERS-409).
CDR Hamel’s previous sea tours include assignments as Weapons/Antiterrorism Officer in USS PORTLAND (LSD 37), Auxiliary Officer in USS HALYBURTON (FFG 40), Engineer Officer in USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61), Material and Logistics Officer (N4) on the staff of Commander, Amphibious Squadron TWO, and Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of USS CARTER HALL (LSD 50). CDR Hamel took command of USS GUNSTON HALL (LSD-44) on 15 September 2018.
Ashore, Commander Hamel served as Officer-in-Charge of NROTCU University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Project Officer at Engineering Assessments Atlantic (EAA), Business Analyst in OPNAV staff for the Vice Chief of Naval Operations (N09X), Strategic Planner in OPNAV staff for the Director of Logistics Programs and Business Operations (N41), and South & Southeast Asia Desk Officer and Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs (Asia) in the Joint Staff (J5).
He holds a Master of Business Administration Degree from Kenan Flagler Business School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Master’s Degree in Defense and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.
He has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), as well as various unit and campaign awards.
