LCDR Frederick G Hettling III
LCDR Hettling graduated from The Citadel in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He holds a Master’s degree in National Security Studies with a concentration in Terrorism Studies from American Military University and an additional Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies with a concentration in African Studies from the United States Naval War College.
At sea, LCDR Hettling served on USS CARR (FFG 52) as 1st LT, CICO, and AOPS, deploying to the 6th Fleet AOR. On USS CARTER HALL (LSD 50), he served as Navigator and CICO, deploying to both 6th and 5th Fleet AOR. Following Department Head School, LCDR Hettling reported to USS JASON DUNHAM (DDG 109) as Chief Engineer, deploying to both 6th and 5th Fleet AOR. Following CG PEO course he reported to USS LEYTE GULF (CG 55) as Chief Engineer, deploying to 6th Fleet AOR. During LEYTE GULF’s SNMG deployment LCDR Hettling served as the Staff N4. LCDR Hettling’s latest assignment was onboard USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3) as the Damage Control Assistant. KEARSARGE served as the Flag Ship supporting relief operations following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria in the Atlantic and the Caribbean.
Ashore, LCDR Hettling has completed an Individual Augmentee to Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay serving as AOIC of Harbor Defense and as a Joint Operation Center Watch Officer. He also served as OIC of the Self Defense Test Ship (EX-PAUL F. FOSTER DD-964), as well as Test and Evaluation Department Officer, Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme Division. LCDR Hettling served as Lead Project Officer, Readiness and Assessments Branch, Commander Surface Forces Atlantic.
His awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.
