Operational duty assignments have included service as the Main Propulsion Division Officer and Navigator on USS CAPE ST. GEORGE (CG 71) homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, as the Operations Officer on USS FARRAGUT (DDG 99), homeported in Mayport, Florida, and the European Operations Officer on the staff of DESTROYER SQUADRON 60, based in Naples, Italy.
Shore assignments have included a two year tour as a Surface Warfare Officer MBA recipient at the University of Rochester’s William E. Simon Graduate School of Business in Rochester, New York and a tour on the staff of the Missile Defense Agency (Washington, D.C.) as the Project Manager, U.S.-Japan Cooperative Programs, within the Agency’s Engineering Directorate. In 2014, LCDR Shanley was selected as a Congressional Fellow and served on the Capitol Hill staff of Congressman Jim Cooper, advising the Congressman on national security, foreign relations, and veterans affairs. In 2016-2017, he served as a Navy Congressional Appropriations Liaison for Shipbuilding, working with both the Senate and House Appropriations Committees. His most recent assignment was as the Associate Director of the Vice Admiral Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the U.S. Naval Academy. In addition to his duties within the Stockdale Center, LCDR Shanley taught midshipmen Leadership Theory and Application, the Surface Warfare Practicum Course for newly selected SWOs, and qualified as a Yard Patrol Craft Officer-in-Charge. His internships completed ashore consist of service on the Capitol Hill Staff of U.S. Senator Arlen Specter, the Financial Controls Division of the Tesoro Petroleum Corporation (San Antonio, TX), and the Technology Transfer Division of the Defense Intelligence Agency (Washington, D.C.).
LCDR Shanley holds an MBA (with a Finance Concentration) from the University of Rochester where he was elected and served as President of the Financial Management Association (FMA) of the Simon Graduate School of Business. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four Gold Stars, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one Gold Star. In 2012, he was selected as the recipient of the U.S. Navy League’s Stephen Decatur Award for Operational Competence.
