Commander Javier Medina
Commander Medina is a native of Puerto Rico. He began his career by enlisting in 1988 and serving onboard USS IWO JIMA (LPH-2) and USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65).
He was commissioned an Ensign in 1998 through the Enlisted Commissioning Program after graduating from Norfolk State University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. He earned a Master's degree in Public Administration from Troy State University and is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Technology with Applied Computer Science. Additionally, he received a certificate for Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I from the Air Force Command and Staff College and JPME Phase II from the Joint Forces Staff College. He also completed certifications in System Engineering, Science and Technology, Program Management, and Test & Evaluation from the Defense Acquisition University.
At sea, Commander Medina served onboard USS CARR (FFG-52) as First Lieutenant, Combat Information Center Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer, USS SAN JACINTO (CG-56) as Main Propulsion Assistant, Auxiliaries Officer, and Assistant Chief Engineer, USS HAWES (FFG-53) as Combat Systems Officer, and USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) as Auxiliaries Officer and Assistant Chief Engineer. His most recent operational tour was as executive officer and commanding officer of Beachmaster Unit Two (BMU-2) from March 2016 through Dec 2018.
Ashore, Commander Medina served at AFLOAT TRAINING GROUP ATLANTIC (ATGL) as Team Leader and AOIC in the Ordnance Handling Safety and Assistant Team (OHSAT), COMMANDER RIVERINE GROUP ONE (COMRIVGRU-1) as Requirements Officer and Science & Technology Officer, COMMANDER EXPEDITIONARY STRIKE GROUP TWO (ESG-2) as Operations Officer and Assistant Operations Officer, SWOSCOLCOM as Academic Director for Fleet Training and at COMMANDER OPERATIONAL TEST AND EVALUATION FORCE (COMOPTEVFOR) as Operational Test Director for the Air Missile Defense Radar. CDR Medina has operational experience in the Atlantic, Middle East, Mediterranean, and Caribbean.
Personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (7 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
