Captain Matthew Kawas
Deputy Commodore

CAPT Kawas is a native of New Jersey. He was commissioned in 1995 from the United States Naval Academy earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1996, he earned a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. His tours at sea included Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer aboard GETTYSBURG (CG 64), Main Propulsion Assistant and Reactor Electrical Assistant aboard GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73), Operations Officer aboard DONALD COOK (DDG 75), and Reactor Mechanical Assistant aboard ENTERPRISE (CVN 65).

In 2011, CAPT Kawas reported to LCS Crew 103, PCU FORT WORTH (LCS 3) Blue Crew as the Executive Officer. Crew 103 completed outfitting of the ship in Marinette, WI, commissioning in Galveston, TX, sailed it to San Diego, CA and completed major program testing for the sea frame and Surface Warfare Mission Package. In April 2014, CAPT Kawas assumed command of the “Rough Riders” of Crew 103. During his command tour, the “Rough Riders” embarked FREEDOM (LCS 1) and FORT WORTH (LCS 3) completing a deployment to the Asia-Pacific region. From June 2016 to November 2018, CAPT Kawas served as Reactor Officer in GERALD R. FORD (CVN 78) leading the ship’s nuclear operators through the propulsion plant test program, commissioning, shakedown, and into the Post-Shakedown Availability.

CAPT Kawas’ tours ashore included Inspector, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, and Politico-Military Planner for homeland security, defense support of civil authorities, and pandemic influenza in the Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate (J-5) of the Joint Staff.

CAPT Kawas’s awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medals, Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medals, and various unit and service awards.
