Rear Admiral Michael E. Boyle
Commander, Carrier Strike Group Twelve
Rear Adm. Michael Boyle is a native of Virginia and the son of a naval officer. A 1987 graduate of Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida, he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Management and was commissioned through the Navy ROTC program. He earned his master’s degree in foreign affairs at the Air Command and Staff College.
Designated a naval aviator in January of 1990, his operational tours include Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 137, where he deployed aboard USS Forrestal (CV 59) in support of Operations Provide Comfort and Deny Flight in Northern Iraq; VFA-81, where he deployed aboard USS Saratoga (CV 60) in support of Operations Provide Promise and Deny Flight over Bosnia-Herzegovina; VFA- 87, where he deployed aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) in support of Operations Noble Anvil and Allied Force over Kosovo as well as Operation Southern Watch over southern Iraq.
Ashore, Boyle’s assignments include VFA-106 as an FA-18 instructor pilot and the air-to-air training department phase head; the FA-18 junior officer assignments officer in Millington, Tennessee; the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation (OSD-CAPE) Navy TacAir analyst; U.S. Pacific Fleet as executive assistant to the Commander, where he served for Adms. Harry Harris and Scott Swift; and Navy International Programs Office as the U.S. Central Command and U.S. Pacific Command Security Cooperation director; and director, International Engagements, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, N52.
Command operational assignments include VFA-81 where he deployed with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17 on USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and USS George Washington (CVN 73) for the Partnership of the Americas deployment, before being reassigned to CVW-11 on USS Nimitz (CVN 68); forward deployed as CVW-5 where he deployed on USS George Washington (CVN 73) for multiple Western Pacific patrols; and Commander, Navy Region Korea/Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea/Commander, Naval Component, U.S. Forces Korea, United Nations Command, Korea.
Boyle assumed command of Carrier Strike Group Twelve in June of 2019.
