1 – Mission of NSI

The mission of New Student Indoctrination (NSI) is to provide standardized basic military instruction to Midshipmen Candidates in order to facilitate successful integration of new students into Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps and college life.

2 – Registration Package:

Mail all completed forms directly to your unit by 15 May 2020. DO NOT mail any forms to NSTC in Great Lakes.

*Males should plan to have their head shaved upon arrival, regardless of if they arrive with or without a fresh haircut.

8 – What to wear: appropriate business casual civilian attire (polo shirts, shorts/pants) and within proper grooming standards.


9 – Arrival

If you are flying in on Monday 8 June (NSI 1), Tuesday 30 June (NSI 2), or Wednesday 22 July (NSI 3) please follow the below instructions,

  • Upon arrival to Chicago O'Hare International Airport, go to the USO located at Terminal 2, Mezzanine Level of the Rotunda, G Concourse, pre-security. Our staff will not be located at the USO located in Terminal 3, post-security.
  • All Midshipmen Candidates will be checked in by our staff at the USO located at Terminal 2. From there, you will be moved to the buses for transportation to Naval Station Great Lakes.
  • For flights arriving prior to 1100 (11AM), lunch will be provided. Dinner will be provided for all Midshipmen Candidates regardless of flight arrival time.
  • Midshipmen Candidates flying in to attend NSI are permitted to stay the night in a hotel with family or friends and check-in to NSI the following day per the below instructions. However, the Navy will not cover the cost to do so. In this situation, Midshipman Candidates must still check-in with NSI Staff at the USO.

If you are being dropped off Tuesday 9 June (NSI 1), Wednesday 1 July (NSI 2), or Thursday 23 July (NSI 3) please follow the below instructions.

  • The check-in location will be at the National Museum of the American Sailor located at Building 42, 610 Farragut Ave, Great Lakes, IL, 60088. This building is located off-base.
  • Midshipmen Candidates need to be dropped off no later than 1100 (11 AM).
  • Our staff will check-in all Midshipmen Candidates at the parking lot of the National Museum of the American Sailor. From there, Midshipmen Candidates will be moved to the buses for transportation to Naval Station Great Lakes in order to begin in-processing.
  • Lunch and dinner will be provided after check-in for Midshipmen Candidates.

Information for Parents and Friends

10 – Ceremonial Oath

  • Family members and friends are invited to come to the ceremonial oath taking place at the Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall at Recruit Training Center Great Lakes at 1700 (5 PM) on Tuesday 9 June (NSI 1), Wednesday 1 July (NSI 2), or Thursday 23 July (NSI 3).
  • The Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall is located on base (See below map). If you are planning to attend, please ensure that your information is properly submitted with your midshipman’s NSI packet by 15 May via the Guest Security Access Form. By doing so, you will be allowed on base. You will only be able to enter through gate 8, located on Ohio Street.
  • All guests, 3 years of age or older, must be listed on the access form. This includes all military guests (Active duty, Reserve, Retired, Veteran) due to the unique nature and access requirements for Recruit Training Command.
  • This gate will be open one hour prior to the beginning of the ceremonial oath and you will be directed to the destination.
  • Upon completion of the ceremonial oath, Midshipmen Candidates will immediately begin training.

11 – Graduation

  • Family members and friends are invited to come to the NSI graduation taking place at the Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall at Recruit Training Center Great Lakes at 0900 (9 AM) on Saturday 27 June (NSI 1), Monday 20 July (NSI 2), or Tuesday 11 August (NSI 3).
  • The Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall is located on base (See below map). If you are planning to attend, please ensure that your information is properly submitted with your midshipman’s NSI packet by 15 May via the Guest Security Access Form. By doing so, you will be allowed on base. You will only be able to enter through gate 8, located on Ohio Street.
  • This gate will be open one hour prior to the beginning of the ceremonial oath and you will be directed to the destination.
  • Upon completion of graduation, those Midshipmen Candidates that will be flying back will be immediately taken to Chicago O'Hare International Airport via buses. Midshipmen Candidates that are being picked up by family members and friends will be immediately available after graduation.
  • Midshipmen Candidates will be required to check-out with NSI Staff prior to departure.
