About the Command….
a new staff Member, you are beginning a rewarding and challenging
assignment. The command is diverse in the fact we have
officers assigned from every Corps and specialty. We have
restricted and unrestricted line, to include Surface Warfare,
Aviation (Pilot), Submarine Warfare (Nuclear), Supply, Medical
Service Corps, Nurse Corps, Limited Duty Officers, Chief Warrant
Officers, Human Resource Officers along with our Marine Corp
Counterparts. Our enlisted community also is very diverse, as
we have Sailors and Marines from specialties from all aspects of the
Navy/Marine Corps Team.
We provide training to 4 separate schoolhouses, which include
Officer Candidate School(OCS), Officer Development School (ODS),
Mustang University (LDO/CWO) and the Naval Sciences Institute
(STA-21). We train over 1500 students/candidates each year,
and are the largest officer’s accession training command in the
military. The Fleet depends on us to provide them with the
competent, well trained and morally and physically strong Officers.
As a new staff member, you will provide a myriad of tasks which
include basic instruction, mentorship and personal guidance.
This will come in the form of a Class Officer/Class Chief Petty
Officer/Class Drill Instructor/Academics instructor or Support
Each role is vital in the overall success of the command mission.
Below is a brief description of each position:
Officer’s oversee every aspect of class development and is
responsible for the safety, training, discipline, integrity, conduct
and general performance of assigned students from the reporting date
to graduation and commissioning. The Class Officer’s role and
involvement is constant, but becomes most critical in the later part
of “applied leadership” training.
Class Chief Petty Officers are detailed as Recruit
Division Commander (RDC) qualified (9508 NEC) and are entitled to
Special Duty Assignment Pay (SDAP), if assigned to a 9508 NEC billet
per EDVR. They function as senior enlisted technical experts
and are responsible for the training, administration, good order and
discipline and general welfare of assigned students throughout all
phases of training.
Drill Instructors are assigned to Officer Candidate School
to indoctrinate candidates in basic military procedures including
ceremonial drill and physical fitness, and adapt the class to the
military lifestyle and intense environment expected during fleet
Academics Instructors are assigned to the
Academics Department and are responsible for delivering all
instruction to every school house at Officer Training Command.
These include subjects such as: Navigation, Seamanship, Pay and
Allowances, Naval Warfare, Engineering, Military Indoctrination,
Damage Control, Division Officer Leadership Course and much more.
They use their leadership experience to bring real life experience
to the material so students get first hand knowledge of how it is
applied in the fleet.
Support Staff. Along with our outstanding
civilian staff, we have military members who augment our support
staff. These positions include Personal and Administrative
Services, Facilities and Information Systems Department, Training
and Readiness and our Special Assistants.
