LCDR Alston received his commission through the Naval ROTC program in 2006. He reported onboard USS FORT MCHENRY (LSD-43) serving as Weapons Officer, Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Officer, and Electronic Warfare Officer. In 2007 he deployed to West and Central Africa providing leadership in support of the multi-national initiative AFRICA PARTERNSHIP STATION (APS). During this tour LCDR Alston qualified as Officer of the Deck Underway and Surface Warfare Officer.

In July 2008 he was designated as an Information Professional (IP) and assigned to Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command, responsible for safeguarding all of the Navy’s networks, for community indoctrination. In January 2009, LCDR Alston reported to the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA where he conducted research into protecting mobile defense networks from adversary influence for the Information Operations Division of the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence. During this tour LCDR Alston earned his Information Warfare Qualification.

In March 2011, he reported to Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE where he completed the LCS training track before reporting in April 2012 to Littoral Combat Ship Crew 101. He served as the Electronic Materials Officer onboard USS FREEDOM (LCS 1) and USS FORT WORTH (LCS 3) deploying in July 2013 to Southeast Asia executing critical missions in the South China Sea during FREEDOM’s maiden deployment. In March 2014, he reported as Officer in Charge of the San Diego detachment for (then) Navy Information Dominance Forces, responsible for conducting cyber security training and assessments throughout the Pacific Region. He was previously assigned as the N6, Director for Communications and Information Systems, for CTF 35 and Commander, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group ONE. 
LCDR Alston has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Georgetown University and a Master of Science in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School (specialization Security and Information Assurance) from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is presently completing a Master of Business Administration at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He possesses the NDU CIO, (ISC)² CISSP, COMPTIA Security+ certifications; further, he is certified by the Committee for National Security Systems as an Information System Security Professional, Information System Security Officer, and System Administrator. His personal awards include: three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for exemplary service under U.S. Representative Bishop (GA-02), and the President’s Call to Service Award in recognition to tireless dedication to volunteerism for Humanitarian Relief efforts.
