Mr. Peterson assumed duties as Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Personnel/Deputy Commander, Navy Personnel Command in January 2019.  He previously served as Deputy Commander / Executive Director, Navy Recruiting Command from 2011 to 2019 and Executive Director, Joint Region Marianas from 2009 to 2011, where he was responsible for requirements, resources, strategy, governance and shore installation support business management oversight for the sole joint region under the Department of Defense.
 
Mr. Peterson is a retired US Navy Captain and Naval Aviator. He served in three A-6E Intruder squadrons and two EA-6B Prowler squadrons. He has accumulated more than 4,400 flight hours, 1,030 carrier arrestments, and 132 combat missions in Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
 
He served as Commanding Officer, VAQ-137 “Rooks,” Executive Officer, USS Kitty Hawk, and Commanding Officer, Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake, CA.
 
Mr. Peterson is a “Fighting Duck” from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, and he graduated from Naval War College with a Master’s Degree in National Strategic Studies. In 1999, he graduated from John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA). In 2006, he completed a year with the Federal Express Corporation as a Secretary of Defense, Corporate Fellow.
