Active Duty for Special Work (PERS-462)

PERS-462 is responsible for the execution and management of the Active Duty for Special Work (ADSW) program.  All requests for ADSW are submitted to PERS-462 in accordance with OPNAVINST 1001.20C – the governing directive for ADSW - and the guidance located on this webpage.

The ADSW program supports Navy mission requirements for which no permanent duty billet or position is programmed and where active duty personnel with the required skills are not reasonably available.

A request for an ADSW requirement is submitted by a command that requires temporary reserve support to facilitate valid, unfunded, unplanned, emergent, non-recurring projects that assigned personnel cannot accomplish.  ADSW is not intended to fill gapped billets.  ADSW orders are issued for a duration of 30 days or more in length and do not exceed 365 days (including the period required for processing onto active duty and release from active duty).  Orders do not cross fiscal year boundaries.

The PERS-462 webpage contains the following information:

•  Guidance for Gaining Commands on the process for submission of the ADSW request
•  Guidance for Reservists interested in applying for ADSW
•  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

*As with any process, keep your Chain of Command informed, including your Unit and NRA leadership.  Contact your OSO for ADSW process assistance.
