CDR ROBERT W. MARRS
Executive Officer VFA-87
Commander Marrs is from Livermore, California and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California Polytechnic State University in December 2001. Designated as a Naval Aviator in January 2004, he reported to VMFAT-101 in Miramar, CA for initial flight training in the FA-18 Hornet. Commander Marrs joined the “Warhawks” of VFA-97 at NAS Lemoore, CA in April 2005. As part of the Navy’s Unit Deployment Plan, he made two deployments in 2006 and 2008 to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan in support of Marine Aircraft Group 12 and 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. During his time with the Warhawks, Commander Marrs served as Schedules Officer, AV/ARM Divo, Air-to-Ground WTO and Assistant Operations Officer. In 2007, he was presented the Lieutenant Commander Frank “Liz” Wittwer Leadership Award.
Upon completion of his tour with VFA-97 in July 2008, he received orders as an instructor pilot to the F/A-18E/F Fleet Replacement Squadron, VFA-122 "Flying Eagles" in Lemoore, California. While at VFA-122 he served as the F/A-18E/F NATOPS Model Manager and graduated with a Master's in Business Administration from the Naval Post Graduate School.
Commander Marrs reported to the staff of Carrier Air Wing ELEVEN (CVW-11) in March 2011 and served as the Strike and Assistant Operations Officer. He deployed on USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) in 2011 in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and on USS Nimitz (CVN 68) in support of RIMPAC 2012.
Following his tour with CVW-11, Commander Marrs reported as a Department Head to the “Blue Diamonds” of VFA-146 in March 2013. He deployed in 2013 onboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Syrian Contingency Operations. Commander Marrs served as the squadron’s Admin Officer, Safety Officer, Maintenance Officer, and Operations Officer.
Following his Department Head tour, Commander Marrs was assigned to the Navy Personal Command at Millington, TN as the West Coast Strike Fighter Placement Officer (Pers-433A) from September 2015 to July 2017. After leaving Millington, Commander Marrs completed a fellowship at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
Commander Marrs is currently the Executive Officer of the VFA-87 “Golden Warriors”. He has accumulated over 2,700 flight hours and 250 carrier arrested landings.
