EXECUTIVE OFFICER, VAW-120
Commander Gregg “Shaggy” Sweeney assumed the duties as Executive Officer for the Greyhawks of VAW-120 in July of 2019.
He is a native of Port Angeles, WA, graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in 2001 and was commissioned as an Ensign through the NROTC program. He was designated as a Naval Aviator in 2004.
After initial training at VAW-120 in the E-2C Hawkeye, Sweeney reported to the Sun Kings of VAW-116. He deployed in 2006 and 2008 aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. Following his first sea tour, he reported to the Redhawks of VT-21 as a flight instructor and training Landing Signal Officer in the T-45A and T-45C.
Sweeney was then selected to be the Flag Lieutenant for Commander, Carrier Strike Group TWELVE, where he deployed in 2011 aboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. He later accompanied the Commander for his next assignment to serve as Flag Lieutenant at Navy Warfare Development Command.
Next, Sweeney served as a Department Head with the Golden Hawks of VAW-112. There he served as Safety Officer, Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer. He deployed in 2012 aboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and multiple training exercises.
In 2016, Sweeney graduated from the US Naval War College with a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies. Most recently, he served as an operations officer in the J3 at Special Operations Command South, where he was the Chief of US Special Operations in Central America.
Sweeney has accumulated more than 3,000 flight hours and 350 traps. He has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Air Strike/Flight Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals and multiple other individual and unit awards.
