CDR Aaron P. Rybar

COMMANDING OFFICER, VAW-120

Commander Aaron Rybar, a native of San Diego, California, graduated from the University of Redlands in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. Upon graduation, he accepted a position with the Boeing Company in Everett, Washington, working on the 747 and 777 Aircraft. Commander Rybar joined the Navy through the Officer Candidate School program and received his commission in February 2000, and was designated a Naval Aviator in October 2002. Upon designation, he reported to the VAW-120 “GREYHAWKS” at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, where he completed initial E-2C Hawkeye training in December 2003.

 

For his initial sea tour, in January 2003 Commander Rybar reported to the VAW-112 “GOLDEN HAWKS” at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, California. While assigned to VAW-112, Commander Rybar completed two deployments, including 22 combat missions in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM embarked with Carrier Air Wing NINE onboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).

In November 2005, Commander Rybar reported to the VT-22 “GOLDEN EAGLES” at NAS Kingsville, Texas, as an Intermediate/Advanced Flight Instructor and Landing Signals Officer in the T-45 Goshawk.
 
In April 2008, Commander Rybar reported to Expeditionary Strike Group THREE, where he served as the Flag Aide for the Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE. While serving as the Aide, Commander Rybar completed an eight-month deployment to FIFTH Fleet Headquarters in Manama, Bahrain in support of multiple Combined Task Forces including Iraqi Maritime and Counter-Piracy Operations in the FIFTH Fleet Area of Responsibility.
 
In March 2010, Commander Rybar reported to the VAW-123 “SCREWTOPS” at Norfolk, Virginia, where he completed two deployments in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM embarked with Carrier Air Wing ONE onboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65). During his tenure as a SCREWTOP, Commander Rybar served as the Safety Officer, Administrative Officer, and Maintenance Officer for the squadron.
 
In December 2012, Commander Rybar reported to NORAD-USNORTHCOM in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he served as the Mexico Desk Officer in the Theater Security Cooperation division of the Policy, Plans Directorate.
 
In October 2015, Commander Rybar reported to the VAW-113 “BLACK EAGLES” as Executive and subsequent Commanding Officer, where he completed a Southern Seas deployment onboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) and two deployments to the SEVENTH Fleet Area of Responsibility onboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). During Commander Rybar’s tenure in Command of VAW-113, the Black Eagles were recognized with both the Battle “E” Award and the Fred Akers Award.
 
In May 2019, Commander Rybar received a Master’s Degree in Strategy from Air War College at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.
 
Commander Rybar has over 4,300 flight hours and over 490 carrier arrested landings. He is authorized to wear the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards) as well as various unit, campaign and service awards.
