Commander Daniel Murphy of Bangall,
New York, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign
in May 2001. He reported to Pensacola,
Florida for flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in May 2002.
Following Fleet Replacement training
in the SH-60B Seahawk helicopter, he reported to the Grandmasters of Helicopter
Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR SIX (HSL-46) at Naval Station Mayport,
Florida. Serving as Detachment
Operations Officer, he made deployments in support Joint Interagency Task Force
South Counter-Narco Trafficking operations, and in support of Operation
ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM as a part of the USS EISENHOWER Carrier
Strike Group operating in the US Central Command Area of Responsibility. He was awarded the Chief of Naval Air Forces
Navy and Marine Corps Association Leadership Award which is selected by peers
for exhibiting the highest levels of excellence in leadership.
In July 2007, Commander Murphy was
assigned to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron ONE (VX-1) in Patuxent River,
Maryland as the model manager for the SH-60B and MH-60R tactical manuals. He spearheaded the creation of the newly
re-designated Helicopter Maritime Strike (HSM) community tactical flight manual
as the model manager of the first edition of the new MH-60R Naval Tactics
Techniques and Procedures publication.
In July 2010, he reported to Carrier
Air Wing EIGHT (CVW-8) as HSM Operations Officer and deployed with the Atlantic
Fleet’s first CVW to embark the MH-60R and MH-60S Seahawk. During this tour, he created and implemented
the first Maritime Strike Lead program, providing the Carrier Air Wing
Commander with a program to develop rotary wing strike leads focused on
maritime missions. He completed a
deployment embarked as part of the USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH (CVN 77) Carrier
Strike Group in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM, NEW DAWN and ENDURING
In June 2012, he reported to the
Spartans of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron SEVEN ZERO (HSM-70) in
Jacksonville, Florida. He served as a
detachment officer in charge in USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CG 58), as the squadron
Operations Officer, and as the Maintenance Officer during a deployment to the
Persian Gulf in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. He also served at U.S. Cyber Command, at Fort
Meade, Maryland from January 2016 - December 2017 as the lead exercise planner
for the nation’s only Tier 1 joint cyber exercises, CYBER GUARD and CYBER FLAG
focused on protecting critical infrastructure, and supporting joint task force
operations directly improving the resiliency of our nation’s critical
infrastructure to major cyberattack.
He is a graduate of the Naval War
College, earning a Master of Arts degree and also holds a Master of Science
degree from the University of San Diego.
Commander Murphy has accumulated more than 2,300 flight hours and
awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Award, Navy and Marine Corps
Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal,
and various unit commendations, service and campaign awards.
Commander Murphy assumed the role of Executive Officer on 14 December 2018
