CDR Derek W. Bintz

Commander Derek Bintz, a native of Naperville, Illinois, graduated from the University of Illinois in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a Master's Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and is a graduate of the Joint and Combined Warfighting School. He was designated a Naval Aviator in April 2005.


Following completion of initial training in the SH-60B Seahawk helicopter at Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR ZERO (HSL-40), he reported to the SWAMP FOXES of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR FOUR (HSL-44) in Mayport, Florida. He deployed with detachments aboard USS VELLA GULF (CG 72), USS TAYLOR (FFG 50), and USS ELROD (FFG-55) flying in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM, and multinational exercises including BALTOPS and NEPTUNE WARRIOR. He served as Quality Assurance Officer, Detachment Maintenance Officer, Line Division Officer, and Detachment Operations Officer and was recognized as the 2008 Pilot of the Year. 


In 2009, CDR Bintz reported to the DOERBIRDS of VT-2 as an instructor pilot in the T-34C Turbomentor. While assigned, he served as the Safety Department Head and NATOPS Officer, in addition to flying with the Fixed Wing Instructor Training Unit. He was named the 2010 TRAWING FIVE and VT-2 Instructor Pilot of the Year for 2010. 


Following VT-2, he reported to the USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH (CVN 77) in 2011, where he was assigned as a Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer. He also served as the Arresting Gear Branch Officer, V1 Division Officer and the Air Department Training Officer. 


In June 2014, CDR Bintz reported as a Department Head to the SPARTANS of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron SEVEN ZERO (HSM-70) at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. He first served as the Safety Officer while deployed on USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH (CVN 77) in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. Additionally, he served as the Detachment FOUR Officer in Charge, Assistant Maintenance Officer and Maintenance Officer. 


In September 2016, CDR Bintz reported to USSTRATCOM at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. While assigned he served as the EA to the Director of Global Operations (J3). 


CDR Bintz's personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.
