CDR John C. Nadder
Commander John Nadder, a native of Richmond, Virginia, graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management. He was designated a Naval Aviator in May 2003.
Following completion of initial training in the SH-60B Seahawk helicopter at Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR ZERO (HSL-40), he reported to the PROUD WARRIORS of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR TWO (HSL-42) in Mayport, Florida. He deployed with detachments aboard USS HAWES (FFG 53) and USS JAMES E. WILLIAMS (DDG 95) where he served as the Training Officer and Maintenance Officer. During this tour he was recognized as the 2006 squadron Maintenance Officer of the Year.
In 2007, CDR Nadder reported to the AIRWOLVES of HSL-40 as an instructor pilot in the SH-60B Seahawk. While assigned, he served as the CNAL Search and Rescue Evaluator and Quality Assurance Officer. Following HSL-40, CDR Nadder reported as an Officer-in-Charge and military liaison at an unmanned aerial vehicle site assigned to Special Operations Task Force - North (Iraq) in support of SOCCENT.
From After returning from Iraq in 2010, CDR Nadder reported to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron FOUR ONE (HSM-41) where he transitioned to the MH-60R. In December 2010 he was assigned to Carrier Air Wing THREE (CVW-3) as the Helicopter Maritime Strike community representative, Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer, and Helicopter Element Coordinator.
In November 2012, CDR Nadder reported as a Department Head to the SWAMP FOXES of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron SEVEN FOUR (HSM-74) at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. He first served as the Combat Element ONE Officer-in-Charge, where he deployed in support of Operations ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR and NIMBLE WARNING, embarked in USS GRAVELY (DDG 107). During his time at HSM-74, CDR Nadder completed Air Force Air Command and Staff College JPME Phase 1, earned his Officer-of-the-Deck (OOD) qualification and was selected as the HSM-74 and Commander, Helicopter maritime Strike Wing Atlantic (CHSMWL) Officer of the Year for calendar year 2014. He completed his tour as the squadron Maintenance Officer.
In June 2015, CDR Nadder reported to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs), Military Manpower and Personnel as an Action Officer, where he was responsible for the coordination of the Department of the Navy 21st Century Sailor and Marine, suicide prevention, and Unified Legislation and Budgeting programs. In February 2018, CDR John Nadder reported to the Proud Warriors of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron SEVEN TWO (HSM-72), became the Executive Officer in May 2018, and assumed command in August 2019.
Commander Nadder’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
