Commander William Guheen was born in Jackson, WY but grew up in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. He attended High School at Hilton College, a small private school in the Midlands of KwaZulu Natal. He received his commission in 2002 from the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Systems Engineering. Following flight training at NAS Whiting Field, Commander Guheen was designated as an unrestricted Naval Aviator in August 2004. He then reported to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron TEN (HS-10) and completed Fleet Replacement Training in the SH-60F/HH-60H Sea Hawk Helicopter.
Commander Guheen’s Operational tours include the “Legendary Black Knights” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron FOUR (HS-4) as the Assistant Operations Officer; Expeditionary Sea Combat Unit ONE (ESCU-1) as the Operations Officer; Carrier Air Wing SEVEN (CVW 7) as the Helicopter Operations Officer, Personnel Recovery Officer and Flight Hour Program Manager and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron EIGHTY FIVE as the Tactics, Safety and Operations Officer. During these tours he supported Operation Enduring Freedom while deployed abroad the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USNS GySgt Fred W. Stockham (T-AK 3017), and the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69)
Commander Guheen’s shore assignments include HS-10 as an instructor in the SH-60F and HH-60H Helicopter and Northern Command where he served as the Missile and Space Domain Chief on the NORAD and NORTHCOM Command Center watch floor.
CDR Guheen is a graduate of the Sea Hawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor and Mountain Flying Courses. His personal awards include Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards), various campaign, service, unit awards and was named HS-10 Instructor Pilot of the Year in 2010.
