Commander, Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN
CAPT Robert E. Loughran
Captain Loughran is a native of Point Pleasant, NJ.  He graduated from Villanova University and was commissioned through the NROTC program in May 1994.  He was designated a Naval Aviator in February 1997 and received initial F/A-18 training at NAS Cecil Field, FL.
Captain Loughran commanded the VFA-151 “Vigilantes” from August 2011 through December 2012, flying the F/A-18C Hornet.  He made two deployments with Carrier Air Wing TWO aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) flying in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and NEW DAWN.  He then commanded the VFA-147 “Argonauts” from March through December 2013 flying the F/A-18E Super Hornet during their deployment with Carrier Air Wing ELEVEN aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) in support of Operation RESOLUTE SUPPORT.
CAPT Loughran’s other sea duty assignments include a Department Head tour with VFA-25 “Fist of the Fleet” and an Air Wing LSO tour with Carrier Air Wing FOURTEEN aboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, and aboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76) on her maiden deployment.  Captain Loughran’s first sea duty assignment was with the VFA-83 “Rampagers” where he completed two Mediterranean / Arabian Gulf deployments aboard USS EISENHOWER (CVN-69) and USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) with Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN flying missions over Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq in support of Operations ALLIED FORCE and SOUTHERN WATCH.
Captain Loughran’s shore assignments include a tour as an F/A-18 Instructor and Demonstration Pilot with the VFA-125 “Rough Raiders”.  He earned a Master’s Degree while studying at the Naval War College in Newport, RI.  Following his squadron command tours, Captain Loughran served on the Joint Staff in Washington DC, and as Battle Director at the US Air Force Central Command Combined Air and Space Operations Center, Al Udeid AB, Qatar.
Captain Loughran has accumulated more than 3,500 flight hours in the F/A-18 with over 1,000 arrested landings.  His personnel awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, six Strike Flight Air Medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendations, and various other service and unit awards.
