After completing EA-6B fleet replacement training, he reported to the “Yellow Jackets” of VAQ-138 completing two WESTPAC deployments onboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) and USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH and a deployment in support of Operation ALLIED FORCE. Transitioning to the mighty F-14 Tomcat, Captain Gentry reported to the “Puking Dogs” of VF-143, deploying in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM onboard USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) and USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73).
In January 2005, Captain Gentry reported to the “Tomcatters” of VF-31 for his department head tour, deploying onboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) and flying combat missions in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. From October 2006 to October 2008, Captain Gentry served as Strike Fighter Placement Officer at the Naval Personnel Command. Subsequently, he attended the Australian Command and Staff College, earning a graduate diploma in Defense Studies.
In January 2011, Captain Gentry reported as Executive Officer of VFA-103, the “Jolly Rogers”. Assuming command in May of 2012, he led the squadron through back-to-back combat deployments in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM onboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69). Following his command tour, Captain Gentry served as Executive Assistant to Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic and Joint Staff J7 USEUCOM Desk Officer.
Captain Gentry reported to Carrier Air Wing ONE as Deputy Commander in March 2018 and assumed command in March 2019.
Captain Gentry has accumulated over 3,800 flight hours and 1100 carrier-arrested landings. His military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal with combat ‘V’, and numerous personal, unit, campaign, and service awards.
