Commander Tom “Brother” Murray, United States Navy

A native of Broomall, Pennsylvania, Commander Tom “Brother” Murray graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering.  After completion of flight training in Pensacola, FL, he received his wings as an Unrestricted Naval Aviator in December 2004.  Following initial qualification in the SH-60F/HH-60H at HS-10, his first assignment was to the “Eightballers” of HS-8, where he deployed in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM in USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74).

 
Following initial sea duty, CDR Murray conducted a Global War on Terrorism Support Assignment from May 2009 to February 2010, where he served as the Officer-in-Charge for a 62-person Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM) unit.  Deployed to Iraq, CDR Murray detached a portion of his unit to Basra, Iraq, while leading the main body at the Victory Base Complex, Iraq; the two units defended over 70,000 personnel from 20 indirect fire attacks.
 
In February 2010, CDR Murray reported to the “Merlins” of HSC-3 as an FRS instructor.  While at HSC-3, CDR Murray attended the Rotary Wing Weapons School, where he earned his Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor qualification and was selected as the Honor Graduate for SWTI class 02-12.  During this tour, CDR Murray also led the first Foreign Military Sales training detachment of the MH-60S, taking a 32-person detachment to Thailand to integrate the MH-60S into the Royal Thai Navy.  CDR Murray was recognized as HSC-3’s 2011 Pilot of the Year.
 
CDR Murray’s second sea tour was to the staff of Commander, Strike Force Training Pacific, where he worked as Helicopter Strike Officer from July 2012 to July 2014.  During this tour, CDR Murray planned the first completely scenario-driven COMPTUEX.  While at CSFTP, CDR Murray completed JPME Phase I through the Naval War College and earned a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
 
In August 2014, CDR Murray returned to the fleet as a Department Head at HSC-4, the “Black Knights.”  While at HSC-4, he deployed in USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73), serving as both the Maintenance Officer and Operations Officer.  CDR Murray was selected as the winner of the 2016 Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award.
 
Following his department head tour, CDR Murray reported to Commander, U.S. THIRD Fleet to serve as Deputy Executive Assistant from November 2016 to September 2018.  He selected for squadron command in March 2018 and reported to HSC-4 as Prospective Executive Officer in August 2019.
 
CDR Murray has accumulated over 3,100 hours in Navy H-60 aircraft.  His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), and various unit and campaign ribbons.
