CAPT John M. Maxwell
Captain Maxwell is a native of Ortonville, Michigan. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1991, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics, as well Auburn University, earning a Master’s of Business Administration.
Upon completion of Naval Flight Officer (NFO) training, Captain Maxwell joined the Red Lancers of Patrol Squadron TEN (VP-10) in Brunswick, Maine. There he deployed to Sigonella, Italy, in support of Operations SHARP GUARD and DENY FLIGHT, as well as Keflavik, Iceland. Subsequently, Captain Maxwell was assigned to VP-30 as a Fleet Replacement Instructor NFO in December 1997.
Captain Maxwell reported to USS KEARSARGE (LHD-3), located at Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia in September 1999. Serving as Ship’s Navigator, he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea in support of U.S. SIXTH Fleet operations. After two years aboard KEARSARGE, he was assigned to Navy Personnel Command (NPC) as the P-3 Shore and Sea Detailers. Captain Maxwell then joined the Golden Eagles of Patrol Squadron NINE (VP-9) at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. While attached to VP-9, he deployed to Misawa, Japan and Manama, Bahrain in support of Operations IRAQI and ENDURING FREEDOM.
After departing VP-9 in November 2004, Captain Maxwell became the Officer-in-Charge, Commander Patrol and Reconnaissance Group Weapons Tactics Unit, where he supported the development of P-3 post-FRS training programs. Following this tour, Captain Maxwell was assigned to U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, where he served as a planner for two and a half years.
In May 2010, Captain Maxwell took command of the Fighting Marlins of Patrol Squadron FORTY (VP-40), located at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, after a year as Executive Officer and a six-month deployment to Talil, Iraq. Following his command tour, Captain Maxwell assumed duties as Navigator in USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, located at Norfolk Naval Base, navigating her through two deployments to the U.S. FIFTH and SIXTH Fleets’ Areas of Responsibility. After departing IKE, Captain Maxwell reported to the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. There he assumed the duties of Director, Joint and Combined Warfighting School and was responsible for the JPME Phase II education of 1000 joint students annually.
In December 2016, Captain Maxwell joined Carrier Strike Group TEN, embarked in USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, as Chief of Staff.
