STGCS (SW) Joseph D. Cowan

Commander, Destroyer Squadron FOUR ZERO
STGCS Cowan was born in Knoxville and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, where he enlisted three days after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. He completed basic training at RTC Great Lakes, Illinois followed by Sonar Tech “A” and “C” schools in San Diego, California.
Senior Chief Cowan’s previous sea duty assignments include the following: USS The Sullivans (DDG 68) where he served as an AN/SQS-53C Technician and Surface Rescue Swimmer; USS Gettysburg (CG 64) as the Combat Acoustics LCPO and Force Protection Officer; and USS Stout (DDG 55) as the Plans and Tactics Departmental LCPO and PUMA UAV Test Lead.
Senior Chief Cowan’s previous shore duty assignments include the following: Commander, HSM Wing Atlantic Surface Rescue Swimmer School on NAS Jacksonville, Florida where certified as a Master Training Specialist and was selected as RSS Sailor of the Year 2010; and COMNAVPERSCOM in Millington, TN as the Lead Sonar Technician Rating Detailer.
From June 2009 to May of 2010, he volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as Guard Force Commander for Task Group Trident, Task Force Protector, and Combined Joint Task Force 82 at the Bagram Theater Interment Facility and the Detention Facility in Parwan. Senior Chief Cowan’s personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (5), the Army Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (9), the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and various other unit and campaign awards.
Senior Chief Cowan was also awarded the Award of Merit with Civilian Life Saving Medal from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. Senior Chief Cowan is married and has three children.
