 DEPUTY COMMANDER, RADM SHAWN E. DUANE


Rear Adm. Shawn E. Duane is a native of Port Washington, New York and a graduate of the State University of New York at Binghamton. He earned his commission from Aviation Officer Candidate School in 1989 and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1991. He holds a Master’s degree in Joint Warfare from the U.S. Air Force, Air Command and Staff College and is joint qualified.

Duane completed operational assignments flying the S-3B Viking deployed with Sea Control Squadron 32 (VS 32) embarked aboard USS America (CV 66) and USS George Washington (CVN 73) to the Persian Gulf, Mediterranean, and Adriatic Seas in support of Operations Deliberate Force and Southern Watch. His deployed experience includes a 2014 assignment as chief of staff, Combined Joint Task Force- Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) based in Djibouti, Africa.

His command tours include Naval Reserve (NR) commander Naval Forces Europe and Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet; director, Maritime Partnership Program Detachment 413; NR Commander Strike Force Training-Atlantic; and commanding officer of the VT-10 “Wildcats” SAU.

His shore assignments include advanced instructor pilot, Training Squadron Eighty-Six (VT-86), VT-4 Squadron Augment Unit (SAU); U.S. 6th Fleet Detachment 802; and deputy commander, Navy Region Southeast Reserve Component.

As a flag officer, Duane has served as director, Maritime Partnership Program, U.S. Naval Forces Europe/Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet and vice commander, U.S. 6th Fleet as well as Deputy Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC).

Duane has flown over 6,000 flight hours in various military aircraft and accumulated 349 carrier arrested landings and a single bolter. His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (three awards), Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Air Medal, and various campaign and unit awards.
