CAPTAIN Vorrice J. Burks
Carrier Air Wing EIGHT
CAPT Burks, a San Francisco, California native, enlisted in the Navy in 1986 as a Nuclear Power Electronics Technician. After completing the Naval Nuclear Power program, he was selected for the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and earned his commission and Wings of Gold from VT-25, NAS Beeville, Texas in September 1992. He graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics in June 1999.
His sea tours include: VF-11 the “RED RIPPERS” flying the F-14D and F-14B from January 1995 to December 1997 stationed at NAS Miramar, California and NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, Virginia and deployed to the Persian Gulf onboard the USS VINSON; VF-32 the “SWORDSMEN” stationed at NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, Virginia from July 2000 to July 2002 and deployed to the Persian Gulf onboard the USS TRUMAN; VFA-2 the “BOUNTY HUNTERS” stationed at NAS Lemoore, California from November 2004 to May 2007 where he completed two deployments to the Persian Gulf onboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN; VFA-41 the “BLACK ACES” stationed at NAS Lemoore, California as the Executive and Commanding Officer from October 2009 to April 2012 where he completed two deployments to the Persian Gulf onboard the USS NIMITZ and USS STENNIS.
His shore tours include: NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, Virginia with VF-101, the Fleet Replacement Squadron the “GRIM REAPERS” from December 1997 to July 2000 as an F-14A/B/D flight instructor and LSO (while assigned to VF-101, he was selected to attend the Navy Fighter Weapons School “TOPGUN”); NAS Lemoore, California with VFA-122, the Fleet Replacement Squadron, the “FLYING EAGLES” from July 2003 to November 2004 where he transitioned to the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet; the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island where he earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies in June 2003; Headquarters, U. S. Pacific Command, Camp H. M. Smith, Hawaii where he served as the Information Operations Plans Branch Chief from May 2007 to March 2009; and NAS Lemoore, California with VFA-122, the Fleet Replacement Squadron, the “FLYING EAGLES”, from April 2009 to September 2009 for refresher training. CAPT Burks reported to the Secretary’s immediate staff in June of 2012 and served as the Administrative Aide to the Secretary of the Navy. He reported to VFA-106 for refresher training in March 2016.
CAPT Burks reported as Deputy Commander of Carrier Air Wing EIGHT in November 2016 and assumed command in August 2018.
CAPT Burks personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Strike Flight Air Medal (3), Navy Commendation (4), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (2), Expert Rifle, Expert Pistol, and numerous other campaign, service, and unit awards. He reported as the Deputy Commander of Carrier Air Wing EIGHT in November 2016. He has accumulated over 4,600 flight and 1,130 carrier-arrested landings.
