CDR John Anderson graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and was commissioned an Ensign in May 2000.  He reported to Pensacola, Florida for flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in March 2002.   


Upon completion of SH-60B Seahawk Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) training, CDR Anderson reported to HSL-49 at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California.  While at HSL-49, he deployed twice to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf onboard USS FLETCHER (DD 992) and USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61) in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF) and ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF).  During this tour, Commander Anderson served as a Squadron First Lieutenant, Detachment Administrative Officer, Detachment Maintenance Officer, and Squadron Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) Officer.  


In 2006, CDR Anderson reported to HSM-41 as an Instructor Pilot in the SH-60B and MH-60R.  In addition to instructional duties, he served as the Squadron Aviation Safety Officer and Safety Department Head, Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing U.S. Pacific Fleet (HSMWP) Night Vision Device Program Manager, and SH-60B NATOPS Evaluator for Commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet.    


After departing HSM-41, CDR Anderson accepted an OIF Global War on Terror Support Assignment (GSA) and was stationed at the United States Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq serving as the liaison between the Multi-National Force-Iraq Resource Management office and the United States Treasury Department.  CDR Anderson was then selected to serve as Flag Aide to the Commandant, Industrial College of the Armed Forces followed by a tour as Flag Aide to the President, National Defense University.    


CDR Anderson completed his Department Head tour with the Raptors of HSM-71 as part of Carrier Air Wing Nine and Carrier Strike Group Three.  There he flew the MH-60R and deployed as Squadron Safety Officer onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) in support of Operation NEW DAWN (OND).  He later deployed as Detachment One Officer-in Charge onboard USS MOBILE BAY (CG 53) and Squadron Operations Officer onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) in support of OEF operations.  Returning from deployment, he served as the Squadron Maintenance Officer and was the recipient of the 2013 CHSMWP Moose Donovan Officer Leadership Award.   


In April 2014, CDR Anderson reported to the United States European Command Directorate for Policy, Strategy, Partnering, and Capabilities (J5) where he served as Country Desk Officer for thirteen countries as well as the Divisional Branch Chief for Western Europe.   


CDR Anderson has accumulated over 2,000 flight hours in naval aircraft and is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, earning an Executive Master of Business Administration degree.  His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards).
