Navy Releases Record of Decision for the Introduction of the P-8A Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft into the U.S. Navy Fleet

NORFOLK, Va. – The Department of the Navy, after carefully weighing public comments, as well as strategic, operational, and environmental effects of the proposed action, has announced the signing of a Record of Decision (ROD) for the introduction of the P-8A Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft into the U.S. Navy fleet. The decision is to home base the P-8A squadrons as described in Alternative 1 of the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which was published in the Federal Register April 25, 2014.

Alternative 1, identified as the preferred alternative in the Final Supplemental EIS, calls for home basing six fleet squadrons and the Fleet Replacement Squadron at Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville, Fla. and six fleet squadrons at NAS Whidbey Island, Wash. This alternative also includes a permanent rotating squadron detachment at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, with periodic squadron detachments to Naval Base (NB) Coronado, Calif.

Alternative 1 presents the greatest re-use of existing facilities and optimizes manpower, simulators, and facilities at NAS Jacksonville and NAS Whidbey Island.

A Notice of Record of Decision has been published in the Federal Register, and the complete text of the ROD is available for review on the project website at www.mmaseis.com. The Final Supplemental EIS and supporting documents are also available on this website. A copy of the ROD may be obtained by writing to the P-8A SEIS Project Manager, at: Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic/EV21CZ, 6506 Hampton Blvd, Norfolk, Virginia 23508.
