Commanding Officer (August 2009 - August 2011)

CDR Melvin K. Yokoyama, Jr. hails from Pahala on the Big Island of Hawaii. He enlisted in the Navy in June 1988. Upon completion of boot camp in San Diego, California he reported to the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program.

Upon completion of BOOST, CDR Yokoyama attended Jacksonville University (Florida) where he graduated in June 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Following commissioning, he reported to NAS Pensacola, Florida for flight training. He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in September 1995.

CDR Yokoyama then reported to VS-41 in San Diego, California for training in the carrier-based S-3B and ES-3A. In November 1996, he reported for his initial squadron tour with VQ-6 based at NAS Jacksonville, Florida where he deployed twice to the Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf flying in the ES-3A aboard the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67) and USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) in support of OPERATION DELIBERATE GUARD, OPERATION DELIBERATE FORGE, OPERATION SOUTHERN WATCH, and OPERATION DESERT FOX.

In April 1999, CDR Yokoyama reported to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California as a student in the Information Warfare curriculum. He was awarded a Master of Science in Systems Engineering in September 2001.
Upon decommissioning of the ES-3A, CDR Yokoyama transitioned to the land-based EP-3E Aires II. From November 2001 to September 2004, he was assigned to VQ-1 Detachment Misawa, Japan where he served as CTG 72.5 Operations Officer and Officer-in-Charge.

In September 2004, CDR Yokoyama reported to VQ-1 based at Whidbey Island, Washington where he served as the squadron’s Training Officer and Operations Officer. He forward deployed to Bahrain and Al Udeid, Qatar as CTG 57.1 Officer-in-Charge in support of OPERATION PHANTOM FURY, OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. He embarked onboard the USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) during its maiden deployment where he qualified as Officer of the Deck (Underway).

In January 2007, CDR Yokoyama reported to USSTRATCOM Cruise Missile Support Activity, Pacific based at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii where he served as the Deputy Commander.

CDR Yokoyama reported to VTC-12 as the Executive Officer in February 2009 and deployed as the COMPHIBRON SEVEN Tactical Air Officer aboard the BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD-6). CDR Yokoyama has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy Achievement Medal (three awards) and various unit awards and campaign medals.
