Explaining the process to become a WTI during a visit to USS Kearsarge
Cmdr. Henry 'Hank' Kim

NORFOLK (September 24, 2015) Cmdr. Henry 'Hank' Kim, assigned to Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center, explains the process to become a warfare tactics instructor (WTI) to junior officers aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3). Akin to 'Top Gun' for naval aviators, SMWDC is increasing the tactical proficiency of the surface warfare community by plucking an elite cadre of surface warfare officers (SWO) to become specialized warfighters called WTIs. WTIs will be the subject matter experts in Amphibious Warfare, Anti-Submarine/Surface Warfare, or Integrated Air and Missile Defense for ships and training staffs (e.g., Afloat Training Group or Center for Surface Combat Systems). SMWDC was formally established June 2015 and is responsible for increasing the tactical readiness of individual surface warfare communities through the creation of warfare doctrine, underway assessment exercises and WTIs.
