SMWDC visits USS Bunker Hill
Capt Olmo

SAN DIEGO (October 15, 2015). Capt. Frank Olmo, deputy commander, Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC), introduces SMWDC and the new career opportunities it provides junior surface warfare officers (SWOs) during a brief on board USS Bunker Hill (DDG 52). Modeled after the success of the Navy Strike and Air Warfare Center (Top Gun), SMWDC is increasing the tactical proficiency of the surface warfare community by plucking an elite cadre of SWOs to become specialized warfighters called Warfare Tactics Instructors (WTI). Olmo, a SWO of more than 30 years said, “This is our time; I would’ve definitely signed up to be a WTI if this program existed when I was a junior officer”. SMWDC was formally established June 2015 and is responsible for increasing the tactical readiness of individual surface warfare communities through the creation of warfare doctrine, underway assessment exercises and WTIs.
