Navy Celebrates 240th Birthday
240th Navy Birthday

SAN DIEGO (October 13, 2015) Capt. Frank Olmo, deputy commander, Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC), answers questions regarding the Navy’s 240th Birthday and the opening of SMWDC during a live cake cutting ceremony and interview on San Diego’s CW 6. The Navy celebrated its 240th birthday with the theme: Ready Then, Ready Now and Ready Always. As part of being ready always, the Navy recently opened SWMDC, a new command dedicated to training a select cadre of surface warfighters called Warfare Tactics Instructors (WTI). WTIs are the tactical subject matter experts in Amphibious Warfare, Anti-Submarine/Surface Warfare, or Integrated Air and Missile Defense for ships and training staffs (e.g., Afloat Training Group or Center for Surface Combat Systems). SMWDC was formally established June 2015 and is responsible for increasing the tactical readiness of individual surface warfare communities through the creation of warfare doctrine, underway assessment exercises and WTIs.
