Joshua W. Welle serves as the Executive Officer in USS CHAMPION (MCM 4) / CREW SPARTAN. Most recently, he was the Chief Engineering Officer in USS ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51). He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2002 and was commissioned a Surface Warfare Officer. During other duties at sea, LCDR Welle was the Weapons Officer in USS PEARL HARBOR (LSD 52) in support of Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. LCDR Welle also served in USS COWPENS (CG 63) as the Main Propulsion Assistant, forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
While ashore, LCDR Welle taught American Government and International Relations at Annapolis. He served as teaching assistant to the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, ADM William Crowe, USN (Ret.), and assisted in teaching a foreign policy seminar. After his tour in the Naval Academy Political Science Department, LCDR Welle was selected to be a military fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), a Washington based think tank. During non-traditional missions, LCDR Welle served as the Deputy Chief for the NATO International Security Assistance Force Civilian-Military Cell in Regional Command South, Afghanistan.
LCDR Welle holds a master’s degree from the University of Maryland in Government and Politics and an MBA from the Robert H. Smith School of Business. He also has continued education experience at the Naval War College and Oxford University. Josh is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Alumni Class President, USNA 2002, and a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Board of Trustees.
His writings have been published by CSIS, Proceedings, Harvard Business Review, and Joint Forces Quarterly; he has guest lectured at STRATCOM, the Wharton School of Business, USDA, and US State Department. He is the lead editor and contributor of In the Shadow of Greatness, a leadership text on the Chief of Naval Operations’ 2013 Reading List and an LA Times Best Seller.
